Weapons: Transfer, import, export or transport of firearms or ammunition at the external borders of the European Union

Across the state border, you can only transport firearms and ammunition of the type that may to purchased and possessed in Slovenia.

The transfer of firearms or ammunition across the state border is possible only at international border crossings, while at the border crossings for interstate and local border traffic it is possible only if so stipulated by an international treaty. Upon entering the Republic of Slovenia, you must immediately declare firearms and ammunition and show the firearms certificate to the authority conducting border controls (border police).No special permit is needed for the transfer of air rifles, bows, crossbows etc.

Border police seize firearms, ammunition and documents from a person who fails to declare firearms. In most countries, the regime of the import of firearms is subject to special authorisation issued by the competent authority of the state to which you are importing firearms; therefore, before intending to travel with firearms to another country, check the conditions of import of firearms at the competent authorities of the country to which you are travelling, and the competent authorities of the countries through which you are travelling. The easiest way to find information is at foreign diplomatic and consular representations in Slovenia.

Foreigners and citizens of the Member States of the European Union residing outside the European Union who come hunting or to shooting competitions may transfer firearms or ammunition across the state border, after having obtained authorisation for the import and export of firearms issued by the authority of the Republic of Slovenia abroad, which is authorised for consular affairs. The permit is issued under the condition that the person:

  • submits a valid firearms certificate issued by the authority of the state of his/her residence or a certificate from that authority that firearms certificate is not needed for the firearms in their home country;
  • proves a legitimate reason for the transfer of firearms or ammunition (evidence of the shooting competition, the invitation to hunt etc.);
  • submits the consent to transfer the firearms across the territory of the Member States of the European Union.

If the permit for the import and export of the hunting or sport firearms or ammunition referred to in the preceding paragraph is not issued by the competent authority, it may be issued under the same conditions by the authority conducting border control.

For the issuance of this permit and the permit for import and transit of firearms and ammunition through the territory of the Republic of Slovenia to another Member State of the European Union, a person must also submit the consent or permits of all states through which they travel.

An individual, who is not resident of the Republic of Slovenia or a Member State of the European Union, but wishes to export firearms or ammunition from it to a state that is not a member of the European Union, submits an application for authorisation of the purchase and export of firearms or ammunition to the administrative unit responsible for the vendor.
