Weapons: The transfer of firearms to a EU Member State
A person who wishes to transfer firearms to the territory of another Member State of the European Union can do so on the basis of the European firearms pass.
Upon the request an individual who resides in the territory of the Republic of Slovenia, the competent authority shall issue a European firearms pass (travel document for firearms), provided that the individual already has the firearms licence for possession of the applied firearms. European firearms pass is issued with a validity of five years. In addition to the European firearms pass, the person must obtain the permission of the competent authorities of the Member States of the European Union through which he/she intends to travel.
Administrative unit issues a European firearms pass provided that you have a valid firearms license, permit to possess firearms or other firearms certificate for the firearms to be entered in the pass. Upon your request, air rifles, bows and crossbows are also entered in the European pass.
If a permit of the Member States of the European Union where the firearms is brought (including transit) is necessary for the entry of the firearms, the competent authority shall send the application and completed pass to the Ministry of the Interior. It sends the pass to the competent authority of the Member State of the European Union to enter the permit in the pass and then returns the pass to the applicant in the same way.
Such permission is not needed for hunters and sport shooters under the condition that the firearms are entered into the European firearms pass and that they have the evidence that the purpose of their journey is hunting or sports activities or competition.
Compared to Slovenia, the Member States of the European Union have in most cases adopted stricter criteria for the purchase and transfer of firearms. It is therefore advised that prior to travelling with firearms to another Member State of the European Union you check the conditions for the entry of firearms at the competent authorities of the state where you are travelling, and at your administrative unit.
Individuals residing in one of the Member States of the European Union may bring firearms into the Republic of Slovenia provided that they are registered in their European firearms pass and that this entry was previously authorised by the Ministry of the Interior. The permit is issued for a period of one year and is entered in the European firearms pass. The permit may be extended for one year. The permit is not issued for reasons of public order or security of the state.
Upon the application of an individual, the competent authority issues a permit for the removal of firearms from the Republic of Slovenia to another Member State of the European Union. This permit is issued if an individual has the adequate firearms document and if there exists the prior consent of the Member States of the European Union to which the firearms is brought (if necessary).
Individuals residing in the territory of the Republic of Slovenia, may purchase firearms from categories A, B, C and D or ammunition in one of the Member States of the European Union and bring these into the Republic of Slovenia on the basis of an authorisation to acquire firearms or ammunition in a Member State of the European Union and with the prior consent of the competent authority.
