Documents and visas: Travelling with a passport or identity card

With a passport you can travel to any country, while with an identity card you can only travel to a limited number of countries.

The main travel document, by which a Slovenian citizen proves his/her identity abroad, is a passport. With a passport you can travel to all countries, while the number of countries where you can travel with an identity card is limited.

Before travelling, check the conditions of entry to the country to which you are travelling. Check also the validity of your travel document.

For travelling abroad, children must have their own travel document. Travelling with a birth certificate or border crossing with only a driving licence is not possible.

Certain countries request that upon the entry into their territory the travel document is valid for at least a certain period of time (e.g. at least half a year or at least one year) or a prior visa.

When travelling, carefully store your passport or identity card.
