Aktivnost: Entering the education profession
The Ministry of Education has the authority to conduct professional examinations in education. The professional examination is a state examination that preschool teachers, teachers, counsellors, librarians and other education staff must pass.
The professions of education staff are regulated, which means that the conditions for practising a profession are set by law. The conditions for carrying out educational work are laid down in the Organisation and Financing of Education Act, while the implementing regulations prescribe the required type of education for teachers and other education staff working in a particular officially recognised study programme.
In addition to proper qualifications, education staff must also be proficient in the language of instruction and pass a state professional examination, which confers full professional qualification to work in education in Slovenia.
Education staff with an upper secondary education qualification may apply to take the professional examination only after 560 hours of educational work in a kindergarten or school, and education staff with a short-cycle higher education or higher education qualification may apply only after 840 hours of educational work in a kindergarten or school. Education staff may apply to take the professional examination if they fulfil the requirements laid down by the laws and regulations on education.
Education staff who apply to take the professional examination for preschool teacher assistants, preschool teachers, teachers, lecturers at a short-cycle higher vocational college, accompanists, laboratory assistants or tutors may take the professional examination if they have successfully completed five in-class practices in accordance with the Rules governing professional examinations.
Counsellors, librarians, organisers of health and hygiene regimes, organisers of meals, organisers of school meals, organisers of adult education or other education staff in adult education, organisers of compulsory elective content, organisers of work-based training, organisers of practical lessons and computer specialists who are organisers of IT activities, may sit the professional examination if they have completed a written assignment, under the guidance of a mentor in an educational institution, to a passing standard.
