Upon the birth of a child requiring special care and nursing, the maternity leave can be extended for the purposes of child care and nursing on the basis of an opinion by the committee of doctors of the Paediatric Clinic of Ljubljana.

The benefit for child care is a monetary benefit for children requiring special care and nursing which is intended for the covering of increased living expenses arising from the family's caring for and nursing of such children. Monthly amount of the benefit for child care is harmonized annually according to the index of consumer prices. The benefits for the seriously mentally disturbed children and children with major motoric disabilities requiring special care and nursing are determined separately. One of the parents or some other person is eligible for the benefit for child care provided that the child has a permanent residence in the Republic of Slovenia.

On the basis of employment relationship, the rights of parents are shorter working hours and rights related to overtime and night shifts.
